Free To RestPsalm 23:2

Twelve Feet From Your Own Car

This message is for A woman standing twelve feet from her own car after the Sunday service, nineteen minutes into holding up the version of herself everybody has agreed on, who has not been tired out loud in six years.

Her car is twelve feet away. She has had the keys in her hand for nineteen minutes.

That is the whole picture, and if you have ever been the one everybody comes to, you can see the parking lot without being told any more about it. The wall with the moss on it. Somebody's grandchild running between the bumpers. Three separate conversations she is inside of at once, and the keys biting into her palm because she has been gripping them since before the second one started. Nobody is being unkind. That is the part that makes it so hard to explain. Every single person who has stopped her has stopped her out of affection.

But each of them wants the same woman. The one who remembers the name of your sister's operation. The one who says the steady thing. The one who does not need anything back, and who has been so consistent about not needing anything back that it has quietly become her job description, and nobody currently standing in that parking lot has any idea that she cried in the shower on Thursday with the water running so it would not be heard.

Six years. That is how long it has been since she was tired out loud in front of another human being. She could not tell you when she agreed to it. There was no meeting. Somewhere in a hard season she held a shape because it was needed, and the shape got a reputation, and now the reputation waits for her in the parking lot with its coat on.

And here is the sentence she would never say, so I will say it for her, and for you. Being the strong one costs something, and it has been coming out of your account for years, and no one has been sent a statement.

Twelve Feet From Your Own Car

What The Shape Has Cost You

Let us start where this site always starts, which is the cost, not the compliment. What it has taken out of you to hold that shape is real. The un-had conversations. The Thursday showers. The way you now scan a room to work out who needs the steady version of you before your coat is even off. The strange loneliness of being surrounded by people who love a shape.

I am not going to tell you the shape was a lie. Most of it was not. Kindness, steadiness, showing up: those are yours and they came from God and they are not a performance. What has happened is subtler and more tiring than pretending. You have been holding a true thing rigid, in a fixed position, for years, and any true thing held rigid for long enough starts to ache in the arms.

So hear this now, before another sentence of teaching, because it is not a reward at the end of an argument. You are free to put it down, and you were freed rather than permitted. Not once the season eases, not once somebody else steps up. Now, in a parking lot, on a Sunday. That is not my opinion, and I would not have the standing to hand it to you if it were; Psalm 23:2 is written into the twenty third Psalm, and it is the Spirit of God who presses it into a tired chest rather than the words themselves.

He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.Psalm 23:2

Sit on that verb a moment, because it does something that ought to be startling. He makes me lie down. Not He suggests it. Not He rewards me with it when the schedule is covered. The Shepherd is the one who puts the sheep on the grass, and He does it because He knows the animal will not do it unaided, and because a sheep that never lies down is not devout, it is in trouble.

Which means rest is not one more task on the list you are already failing. That is the trap laid for exactly the reader I am writing to, and I want to disarm it now. If rest arrives as another instruction, another thing to be good at, another shape to hold, then it is not rest, it is the same job in softer clothing. Nobody is telling you how to do it. Nobody is going to grade your afternoon. There is no correct green pasture.

And take this too, because these paragraphs have been read half braced for the turn where somebody gets told off. You have let nobody down, and being tired has never once been counted against you. Not by being tired, not by having nothing left on a Sunday, not by wanting twelve feet of parking lot to yourself. Psalm 103:14 says He knows our frame and remembers we are dust, and the Spirit who lives in you is not tapping His watch at the edge of your week.

Now look at the second half of the verse in Psalm 71 that this whole site is built on. I am as a wonder unto many, says the psalmist, and then, immediately, but thou art my strong refuge. The people watching are in the first half. The refuge is in the second. And the refuge was not given to the audience. It was given to him, to go inside.

That is the difference between being looked at and being sheltered, and it is the whole of what I want for you this afternoon. Whatever anybody in that parking lot thinks they can see standing there, they are seeing His work and not your resources, and it is His Spirit keeping you upright in that parking lot. So you are not the roof over anybody. You have been under one.

There is a plainer thing to say as well, and I am not going to dress it up. If the tiredness has stopped feeling like tiredness, if it has gone somewhere flat or frightening, if the thought of the week ahead makes something in you want to stop altogether, then please tell one real human being today, and if it is darker than that, ring your doctor or a crisis line before you ring anybody else. That is not a failure of the shape. That is the shepherding, arriving through people with hands and phone numbers, and reaching for it is obedience and not collapse.

The breakthrough

Something is available to you here, in whatever room you are reading this in.

You are already inside the refuge, and it is where you were standing the whole time you thought you were holding the roof up. That is not something to achieve by the end of the paragraph. Psalm 23:2 says the Shepherd makes His own lie down, and His Spirit is the one carrying that sentence past a set of defenses, which is why it lands as relief rather than as instruction.

So put one thing down. One. Not the whole load, not permanently, not with an announcement to anybody. You do not have to tell the parking lot. You do not owe anyone an explanation for a Sunday afternoon, and the shape does not need a formal resignation.

You are not going to come undone, and the steadiness was never a muscle you were flexing. That is the fear underneath the grip and it is not true. It is His, in you, and His Spirit does not switch off because somebody sat down, any more than the promise in Psalm 23:2 waits on a grip.

Declare this over yourself

You are not talking yourself into a rest you have to justify. The refuge belongs to you, given by God rather than earned in six years of holding on, and His Spirit is the one making Psalm 23 live in a tired body rather than sit in a book. What He does with the season you are in, and how long it runs, He arranges in His own way, and you can leave that with Him and still lie down tonight.

  1. Shape everybody agreed on, you are not my name and you do not get my Sunday afternoon. Psalm 23 says the Shepherd makes His own lie down in green pastures, so the lying down is His doing and not one more thing on my list. You were a coat I put on in a hard season, and I am taking it off in the parking lot.
  2. Fear that I am only wanted for what I carry, you do not get to price me. In the name of Jesus I hand you back, because the Shepherd who makes me lie down never once checked the schedule first. What He gives me is rest, and rest that is given is not rest that is owed.
  3. Lord, You are my strong refuge and You have not asked me to keep this up for anybody. I am naming one thing and setting it down today, and Your Spirit is holding what I let go of. Nothing about me comes undone when I sit down, because the steadiness was Yours the whole time.
