The Keeper Of Every Anniversary

This message is for the man who keeps every family record and remembers every anniversary for everybody, and whose own birthday went past unmarked in June

There is a file, and the file is very good, and nobody in that family has ever seen it.

It has the dates in it. Birthdays, obviously, but also the harder ones: the day his aunt's first husband died, which she does not mention and which he texts her about every year, and the anniversary of his cousin's daughter, which is the twelfth of March and which he marks by ringing on the eleventh so she is not on her own with the eve of it.

He is the reason nobody in that family is forgotten. Twenty six people. He has done this for about fifteen years and he is good at it, and it is not a burden and he would not hand it to anybody.

His birthday was the fourteenth of June. Nothing came. Not one message, not a card, not a mention. He noticed at about nine at night, and then he noticed that he had noticed, and he did not like that about himself.

He has not told a single person. Obviously. There is no way to tell somebody that they forgot your birthday that does not immediately become a demand.

You know that file. Maybe you are not the archivist. But somewhere you are the memory of something, and the memory has never once been kept for you.

The Keeper Of Every Anniversary

Say what fifteen years of keeping has cost

Nobody in that family has counted it, so let us, once, precisely.

It has cost him about forty hours a year, which is a working week, every year, since he was twenty nine.

It cost him the innocence of receiving. Now, when somebody does remember something about him, his first response is to check whether they were prompted, and that is a thing he cannot switch off.

And it cost him the fourteenth of June, which sounds small and was not, because the file exists precisely so that nobody in that family ever has to feel what he felt at nine o'clock that evening, and he built it, and he was the one person it did not cover.

You have been the reason nobody is forgotten, and God has never once needed a file to remember you. Isaiah 49:16 says He has graven you on the palms of His hands, and it is His Spirit who takes graven off a page and puts it on a man sitting up on the fourteenth of June. There is no reminder system in that sentence. There is a mark that does not come off.

There remains a rest, and remains is the word

There is one line built for a man who keeps everybody else's dates.

There remains therefore a rest to the people of God.Hebrews 4:9

The verb is the whole verse. Remains. Not is offered, not is available if you can get to it, not will be provided at some later point. Remains, meaning it is still there, meaning it has been there the entire time and has not been used up by anybody, including by fifteen years of a man not taking it.

That is a specific and strange comfort and it is exactly the one he needs, because his fear is not that rest is wrong. His fear is that his has quietly expired, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes remains land on that fear rather than sit there as a nice thought about sabbath.

You have a rest that remains, and it has not gone off, and nothing about it depended on your claiming it earlier. That is not a soft reading of a dense chapter. The written word chooses a verb about persistence on purpose, and the Spirit is the one who makes still there feel like an open door rather than a missed appointment.

And let me be plain, because otherwise this becomes an entry in the file. Rest here is not a discipline you are behind on. I am not telling you to stop keeping the dates, I am not asking you to say anything about June to anybody, and not one of those twenty six people has been let down by a man who is tired.

Being remembered is not something you can arrange

The fear here is oddly precise, and it is worth saying plainly.

It is that if he ever mentioned it, the family would immediately start remembering, and it would be prompted, and prompted remembering is worse than being forgotten because it proves the thing he suspects: that he is a function in that family rather than a member of it.

You are a member rather than a function, and that was settled long before the file existed. Ephesians 2:19 says you are no longer a stranger or a foreigner but of the household of God, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes household a word about belonging rather than about usefulness.

One plain sentence before we go on. If nine at night on the fourteenth of June has been coming back, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you tell anybody in that family. That is not a failure of the file. That is the shepherding, arriving through people with hands and telephone numbers, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So take one thing off the file this week. One.

Not the aunt, not the twelfth of March, not the whole system. Pick the smallest date on that list and let it go unmarked this year, deliberately, as an experiment in being a member rather than a mechanism.

You have a rest that remains and it does not have to be scheduled around twenty six people. Hebrews 4:9 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the same Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a precise man can actually enter in a diary as nothing.

And if somebody notices it was not marked, they notice, and it will be a two sentence conversation.

You are graven on the palms of His hands, and that has never once needed a reminder to fire. Isaiah 49:16 says it plainly, and the same Spirit who wrote that was in the room at nine at night on the fourteenth of June.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where nobody can hear you. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the rest was given to you, so the authority to leave one date unmarked belongs to you and it does not belong to a file nobody has ever seen. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for a long fifteen years, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a man whose birthday went past. However He answers about that family and whether anybody ever notices, the outcome is His, and being the memory of twenty six people was never a job He handed you.

  1. June the fourteenth that nobody wrote down, you are not evidence that I am not loved. Isaiah 49:16 has me graven on the palms of His hands, and there is no reminder system anywhere in that sentence.
  2. Suspicion that I am a function in this family rather than a member of it, you do not get another year. Ephesians 2:19 says household and not staff, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding since I was twenty nine.
  3. Lord, there remains a rest for Your people, and remains is the word, because mine has not expired while I was keeping everybody else's dates. Your word says I am graven on Your hands. I thank You, and I am leaving one date unmarked this year on purpose.

Why we ask you to say these out loud

The word this stands on
