An Honest AnswerEphesians 4:25

Four Words At The Coffee Machine

This message is for the man who is asked at the coffee machine how he stays so calm and answers with four words that are not true

Just take it steady.

Four words. He has said them, by his own estimate, several hundred times, and they are the smoothest thing in his working life.

It happens by the machine, mostly, because the machine is where the honest questions get asked in any building. Somebody comes and stands next to him while it grinds and says, I do not know how you stay so calm, and there is a pause, and out comes: just take it steady. And the other person nods, and the coffee finishes, and everybody goes back to their desk.

It is not true. He is not steady. What he is doing is a particular kind of narrow, effortful holding that has nothing to do with steadiness and that he could not teach anybody, because he does not understand it himself and he suspects it is not sustainable.

And what bothers him about the four words is not that they mislead. Nobody at that machine is being harmed. It is that they close a door that he would, occasionally, quite like to leave open, and by now the door closes before he has decided anything.

You have four words. Everybody who has been asked the same question too often has a phrase that arrives before they do.

Four Words At The Coffee Machine

Say what the four words have cost

Let me count it, gently, once. Nobody at that machine has.

They have cost him a colleague who asked twice and then stopped asking, which is what people do. They have cost him the freedom to be tired in a building where he has been filed under calm. And they have cost him about two years of small closings, each of which was nothing, and which add up to a man who now finds it genuinely difficult to say a true sentence at work even when he wants to.

You have been closing a door several hundred times, and God has never once been on the other side of it waiting to be let in. Psalm 139:2 says He understands your thought from far off, and His Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it beside a man at a coffee machine at ten past eleven. The four words have never once worked on Him.

Speak truth with your neighbor, and that is a smaller command than it sounds

There is one line built for a man at a machine.

Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another.Ephesians 4:25

Read the reason attached to it, because the reason is the whole thing. Not because lying is against the rules. Because we are members one of another, which is a body image, and the point of it is that a body cannot function if one part is transmitting false readings to the rest.

That is not a moral lecture about a coffee machine. It is a design note. The building does not need him to be honest so that it can be improved. He needs to be honest because a man who transmits nothing eventually stops receiving, and the same Spirit is the one who makes that a live warning rather than an ethical principle.

You have permission to be a part rather than a pillar, and the permission comes with the design rather than from me. That is not a soft reading of a hard verse. The written word gives the reason as membership rather than obligation, and the Spirit is the one who makes belonging feel less exposed than performing.

And I will say this plainly, once. Your honest sentence is not evangelism. It is not a way into a conversation about God at work, and nothing here asks you to be a witness at a coffee machine. What the other person does with what you say is theirs and it was never your job.

What a true sentence looks like at a coffee machine

The constraint is narrow. It has to be true. It has to fit in the time it takes a machine to finish. And it must not turn you into a subject.

Which rules out both of the options he has been choosing between. Just take it steady fails the first test. Telling a colleague what this year has actually been fails the third, and he knows it, which is exactly why he never does.

What is left is small. Honestly, I am running on empty this week. Or: it is not steadiness, it is just practice. Or: I would not call it calm, but thank you.

You are allowed to hand a colleague a true thing without handing him your life, and that is honesty rather than a compromise of it. Proverbs 12:19 says the lip of truth shall be established for ever, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes established mean a thing you can stand on for four seconds at a machine.

One plain sentence before we go on. If the narrow effortful holding has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today and use more than four words, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody at work. That is not a failure of steadiness. That is what a true sentence is for, arriving properly.

The breakthrough

So write one down. Genuinely, on paper, today.

Keep the four words. A workplace runs on smooth answers and there is nothing false about a machine side pleasantry. But have one true sentence in your pocket for the person who asks twice, or who stands there after the coffee has finished.

You have a true sentence available, and using it does not put your life on a stage. Ephesians 4:25 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a man can actually say at eleven in the morning.

And when you have said it, you are done. Their follow up question is theirs to ask or not ask, and their comfort is not your department.

You were never required to be steady, and God has not once asked you to be the calm one for that building. Matthew 11:29 says His yoke is easy and His burden light, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been standing at that machine with you for two years.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud in the car or the stairwell. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the truth was given to you, so the authority to say how it actually is belongs to you rather than to a coffee machine. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a line like this land in a man who has said the same four words several hundred times. However He answers about the year, the outcome is His, and managing what a colleague does with an honest sentence was never a job He handed you.

  1. Four words I say at the coffee machine, you are not my testimony. Ephesians 4:25 gives the reason as membership rather than rule keeping, and a part that transmits nothing eventually stops receiving.
  2. Fear that one true sentence would turn me into a subject, you do not get to write my answers. Four honest seconds is not a display, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is carrying what I have been carrying behind a phrase.
  3. Lord, You desire the truth from me and You have never once been on the far side of that door. Your word says the lip of truth is established for ever, and Your yoke is easy. I thank You, and I have one true sentence written down and it is in my wallet.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
