She was doing the sums in the car and she got to four years and stopped counting.
Not four years without prayer. She prays constantly, for other people, at a rate that would exhaust a normal person. Four years since somebody put a hand on her shoulder and prayed for her, out loud, by name, with her standing still and not doing anything.
She has been trying to remember the last time. She thinks it was a Sunday evening at the old building before they moved, and a woman called Marjorie who has since died did it in the kitchen while the urn was going, and she can remember the smell of the kitchen and about six words of what Marjorie said.
Four years.
Nobody has withheld anything from her. That is what makes it difficult to raise. She is the person you go to. There is no line for people like that, and the arrangement is so settled that asking would now be a strange thing to do, and a bit of an event, and she cannot face being an event.
You know this shape. Maybe it is not prayer. Somewhere you are the one who gives out a specific thing, and it has been years since anybody thought to give that same thing to you.

Say what four years has cost, before anything else
Nobody in that building has counted it, so let us.
It has cost her the experience of being on the receiving end, which is a different thing from praying and which the soul needs at intervals.
It has cost her Marjorie's kitchen, in the sense that she now has to reach back four years to find one, and a memory that has to be reached back for that far starts doing a job it was not built for.
And it has cost her something she would be embarrassed to say out loud: she has begun, quietly, to wonder whether she counts. Not whether God loves her, which she believes. Whether anybody in that building would notice if she stopped coming.
You have been giving out for four years with nothing coming back, and God has never once required you to be the strong one for that room. Psalm 68:6 says God sets the solitary in families, and the same Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it in a woman doing sums in a parked car. He has never been part of the arrangement.
Bear one another's burdens, and the one another goes both ways
There is one line built for a woman who has been carrying in one direction.
Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.Galatians 6:2
Two words in there are doing more work than people notice. One another. It is a reciprocal construction, which means the sentence does not describe a class of carriers and a class of carried. It describes a body in which the direction changes.
Which means a woman who only ever carries is not fulfilling the law of Christ more thoroughly than everybody else. She is doing half of it, and the half she is missing is the half where somebody else gets to obey, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes that a live reframe rather than a clever point about grammar.
You have a place on the receiving side of that sentence, and it was given to you rather than earned by you. That is not a soft reading of a short verse. The written word makes the construction reciprocal on purpose, and the Spirit is the one who makes being carried feel like belonging rather than like failure.
And let me be plain, because otherwise this becomes another item. Rest here is not a discipline you are behind on. I am not telling you to step back from anything, I am not asking you to announce a need to that church, and not one person in that building has been let down by a woman who is tired.
Asking is not the same as collapsing
The fear here is worth saying out loud, because it is the actual obstacle.
It is that if she asks, something changes. The people who lean on her hear that the wall has moved, and then some of them stop leaning, not out of unkindness but out of care, and she loses the one place she has ever been sure she was needed.
You are not held in that room by your usefulness, and being carried once does not cost you your place. Isaiah 46:4 says He has made and He will bear and carry and deliver, and it is His Spirit who makes bear a word about her rather than a word she says about somebody else.
One plain sentence before we go on. If the wondering whether you count has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody at church. That is not weakness in an intercessor. That is the shepherding, arriving through people with hands and telephone numbers, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So ask one person. One, this week.
Not the church, not the leadership, not a public thing. One person you already trust, in a kitchen or a parking lot, and ask them to pray for you out loud with their hand on your shoulder while you do nothing at all.
You have a place on the receiving end of the law of Christ, and asking for it is obedience rather than weakness. Galatians 6:2 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and it is the Holy Spirit who takes a written line and makes it something a woman can actually ask for on a Tuesday.
And if it is awkward, it is awkward. Four years of rust makes anything awkward, and awkward is not a reason to keep going without.
You are carried by the one who has borne you from the womb, and being borne has never been a demotion. Isaiah 46:3 says you have been borne by Him from birth, and the same Spirit who wrote that was in Marjorie's kitchen four years ago and has not left the room since.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the carrying was given to you, so the authority to be on the receiving end belongs to you and it does not belong to four years of precedent. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for four long years, and His Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a woman nobody has prayed for since Marjorie. However He answers about that church and the years ahead, the outcome is His, and being the one everybody leans on was never a job He handed you.
- Four years of praying for everybody else, you are not the shape I have to keep. Galatians 6:2 is a reciprocal sentence on purpose, and a woman who only ever carries is doing half of it.
- Fear that asking would move the wall and cost me my place, you do not get another four years. Being carried once is not a resignation, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding for a building.
- Lord, You have borne me from the womb and You said You would carry and deliver, and bear is a word about me and not only a word I say about other people. Your word says You set the solitary in families. I thank You, and I am asking one person this week and standing still while they do it.
