Wholly At HomePsalm 68:6

The Seat Behind The Driver

This message is for the seat behind the driver, taken on purpose because it is the only one on the minibus that does not require pairing off, and twenty years of no longer expecting to fit anywhere

There are twenty-two people going and one minibus, and he is on the sidewalk first, which is not an accident. Being first means he gets the single seat behind the driver, the one with the wheel arch under it and nowhere to put your knees, and nobody ever fights him for it.

He takes it before anybody else is off the curb. Then he puts his bag on the floor between his boots and looks out of the window while the rest of them work out the pairs behind him, which takes about ninety seconds and involves a great deal of laughing, and none of it is unkind, and not one word of it is about him.

That is the part that would be hard to explain to any of them. Nothing has been done to him. Nobody left him out. He got there first and chose the seat, the same way he has chosen the end of the row, the washing up, the lift home for the person who lives furthest away, and the job that has to be done alone in the back room while the rest of it happens in the hall.

He has done this for about twenty years. Long enough that it stopped feeling like a decision and started feeling like the truth about him. And somewhere along the line he quietly stopped expecting anything else, and told himself that was maturity.

You know the maneuver, because you have your own version of it, and you did it this week.

The Seat Behind The Driver

He does not visit the odd one out. He houses them.

Let us name what it costs before anything gets lifted, because a page that skips that part has not understood the first thing about it.

It costs the energy of arriving early to every room for two decades. It costs the small ongoing labor of being pleasant about a thing that hurts. It costs the moment at the end of a good day when everybody says what a good day it was and something in your chest does not agree and you cannot say why. And most of all, it costs the slow arrival of a conclusion, somewhere in the middle years, that being the wrong shape for rooms is simply the truth about you. That conclusion does not arrive with a bang. It arrives as tidiness.

None of that is a gift, and this page is not going to dress it up as one. Being the odd one in the room is not a calling and it is not a superior spirituality and it does not make anybody deep. It is a cost, and it has been paid quietly and in full, by you, over years nobody counted.

You are not a leftover in God's house, and you were not squeezed in at the last minute either. That is not sentiment; it is what is written in one of the plainest sentences in the psalms. God settles the solitary in a home. Not visits. Not tolerates. Settles, which is a word about tenancy and permanence and a bag put down for good. And the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it under a man in a minibus seat, because information about belonging has never once made anybody belong.

Father of the fatherless and protector of widows is God in his holy habitation. God settles the solitary in a home.Psalm 68:5 to 6

Look at the company that verse keeps. The fatherless. The widow. It is a list of people who are in a room but not paired off in it, people whose situation is visible to everybody and discussed by nobody, and God does not walk past them with a kind expression. He houses them. That is His characteristic move, stated as a fact about who He is, in the same breath as His own dwelling place.

Now, before we go on. If the not fitting has stopped being loneliness and started being something heavier, if there are hours where staying is hard work, please do not carry that on your own tonight. Say it out loud to one safe human being today, and if it is urgent, contact your local crisis line or emergency service. That is not a failure of faith and it is not a detour from this article. It is the same shepherding, done properly.

You have a place that was never put to a vote, and no room you walk into holds the deeds to it. Scripture says it flatly: no longer strangers and outsiders, but fellow citizens with God's people and members of His household (Ephesians 2:19). Member of the household is not a compliment paid to somebody who tried hard. It is a legal description of where a person lives. And it is the Spirit who makes a legal description feel like a kitchen.

Here is the thing about a refuge, and it is why the second half of that psalm matters more than the first. A refuge is not somewhere you are admired. It is somewhere you are unobserved. Nobody in a shelter is being assessed for how well they are coping in it. You go in, and the weather stays outside, and the point of the building is that it is between you and the wind rather than in front of an audience.

That is what has been holding you up all these years, and it is worth saying plainly, because there is a version of this article that would turn around here and tell you that you are secretly wonderful. That is not the good news and it would not last the week. The good news is much better: the thing that has kept you kind, kept you turning up, kept you taking the awkward seat without any bitterness about it, was never a hidden strength in your character. It was a shelter you have been standing inside without knowing its name.

You were given that shelter for your own sake, and not so that anybody watching could learn something from you. The word says God is a hiding place for His own and surrounds them with songs of deliverance (Psalm 32:7), and a hiding place by definition is not a stage. The Holy Spirit did not put you in there as an exhibit. He put you in there because that is what a Father does with somebody He loves.

So this is not a page about getting the room to change. The room may change and it may not, and nothing here is going to promise you that the people who never quite made space will one day come round, because that is not mine to promise and you have heard enough of that sort of thing already.

You have somewhere to be at home right now, today, in the middle of a life that has not been rearranged in your favor. That is what is written and the Spirit makes it live: at home with Him, not at home once the room comes good. Those are two different addresses and only one of them has ever had your name on the door.

The breakthrough

So here is the thing to receive, right where you sit, on whatever seat you took first today.

Home is not the room you finally get accepted into. Home is a Person, and the tenancy started long before you noticed it, and the twenty years of arriving early were spent inside it and not outside it.

You are already settled, and nothing about you needs correcting before this becomes true. There is no version of you, better at rooms, easier to place, that God has been waiting for. Psalm 68:6 says He sets the solitary in families, and there is no probation period written anywhere in the arrangement, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes settled a thing a body can feel in a seat behind the driver.

Stop taking the temperature of the room. It was never the building you lived in.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where you can hear yourself. You are in Christ and Christ is in you, and that is the standing every one of these lines rests on, not your ability to feel at home while you say them. Scripture is the authority here and the Holy Spirit is the one who carries it in, and neither of those depends on your voice being steady. Speak first to the room that has been setting your terms, then to the conclusion you reached about yourself years ago, and then turn and speak to God. Whether any door in your week ever opens differently, that is His to decide, and it changes nothing about where you live.

  1. Room I walk into already counting, you do not set the terms of where I belong. God settles the solitary in a home, and I came into you from somewhere rather than looking for somewhere.
  2. Conclusion I came to years ago about my own shape, you do not get to be the last word on me. What is written is that I am a member of God's own household, and the Holy Spirit did not move me in on probation.
  3. Father, You are at home with me and I have never once been strange to You. I sit down here in the name of Jesus, and I am not reading the room any more, because You settled me in this house and You have not put me on trial in it.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
