She has been doing a thing since she was fifteen and she noticed herself doing it again on Thursday, at forty.
Somebody at that lunch mentioned a ski trip, in the ordinary way that people mention things that are ordinary to them, and she did the calculation. Not about money. About whether to say she has never been, which is true and which will produce a small warm surprise and then a slightly careful conversation, or to say nothing and let it pass, which is what she did.
She has been letting things pass for twenty five years. It started at fifteen, on a scholarship, at a school where the other girls talked about houses in the summer, and it is a skill now, a good one, and it works.
She is very senior. That is the part that makes this hard to explain to anybody. She is the most senior person at most tables she sits at. And she still does the calculation at least twice a lunch, and the calculation is about whether to be visible, and it has nothing to do with her competence and everything to do with a school hallway in a different decade.
You know that calculation. Maybe not class. But somewhere you learned early to check a room before you said something ordinary about your own life.

Name what the calculation costs
Nobody at that table has counted it, so let us.
It has cost her twenty five years of small omissions, and small omissions add up into a version of a person that is accurate in every detail and untrue overall.
It cost her a friendship in her thirties that she thinks would have gone somewhere if she had answered one question honestly at a dinner, and she did not, and she still thinks about it.
And it costs her about four seconds twice a lunch, every lunch, forever, which she has stopped noticing and which is the reason she comes back from perfectly good work events tired in a way that the work does not explain.
You have been running a calculation since you were fifteen, and God has never once seated you as a guest. Psalm 139:1 says He has searched you and known you, and it is His Spirit who takes known off a page and puts it at a lunch table on a Thursday. Everything you have been letting pass, He has had the whole time.
No more strangers and foreigners
There is one line built for a woman doing arithmetic over a lunch plate.
Now therefore you are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.Ephesians 2:19
Let the Holy Spirit slow you down over two words, because both are about status rather than feeling. Fellowcitizens, which is a legal term, and household, which is a family term, and the sentence puts them side by side because Paul is talking to people who had been outside a very specific room.
And the opening words are therefore and no more, which means something changed and the change is complete. She has not been admitted on trial. She is not a scholarship case in the household, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes that a live status at a conference lunch rather than a doctrine about Gentiles.
You are a citizen rather than a guest, and the citizenship was granted rather than earned by performance. That is not a way of talking somebody out of a real history. The written word uses two status words and puts no more in front of them, and the Spirit is the one who makes citizen something a woman can feel while somebody talks about a ski trip.
And I want to be careful, because this site would be a cruelty otherwise. Nothing here says that where you grew up was a disadvantage God was working around. And nothing here makes not fitting into who you are, because a woman whose identity is being the scholarship kid has let a school hallway name her at forty.
What this does not change
It does not change the table. Somebody will mention a ski trip again, and the calculation will present itself, and this article does not give you a line to say.
What can change is what the calculation is defending. At the moment it is defending a fifteen year old in a hallway who was right to be careful. She was. And she is forty now, and the room she is actually in is a different room, and the guard belongs to a school that closed.
You have a citizenship that no lunch table issued, and it does not require you to be careful about a ski trip. Ephesians 2:19 puts no more in front of stranger and foreigner, and it is the Holy Spirit who turns a written line into a chair at an actual long table.
One plain sentence before we go on. If the tiredness after those events has gone somewhere heavier, if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you tell anybody at work. That is not weakness. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So say the ordinary thing next time. That is the practical move and it is smaller than it sounds.
Not a speech about where you grew up. Just answer a question about a ski trip with the true four words and let the small warm surprise happen and let the careful conversation be slightly awkward for ninety seconds, because that is all it will be, and it will cost you far less than the calculation has been costing you.
You have been a fellowcitizen the whole time, and the status does not depend on anybody at that table understanding your fifteenth year. Ephesians 2:19 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the same Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a woman can sit down on at a long table.
And then eat your lunch. You are the most senior person there and you have been for a while.
You are at home with God at that table, and you have been at every table since the scholarship. Psalm 91:9 says you have made the Most High your habitation, and the same Spirit who wrote that was in a school hallway when you were fifteen.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the car or the hotel room. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the citizenship was granted to you, so the authority to say where you belong is yours and it does not belong to a lunch table. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for twenty five years of calculating, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a woman who was the scholarship kid at fifteen. However He answers about those rooms and those people, the outcome is His, and being easy for anybody to place was never a job He handed you.
- Long table of people unlike me, you do not get to make me a guest. Ephesians 2:19 uses two status words, fellowcitizen and household, and puts no more in front of stranger and foreigner.
- Calculation I have been running twice a lunch since I was fifteen, you do not get another twenty five years. It is defending a girl in a hallway at a school that closed, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding at every table.
- Lord, You have made me a fellowcitizen and of Your own household, and the papers went through long before I sat down anywhere. Your word says I have made the Most High my habitation. I thank You, and I am answering the next ordinary question with the true answer.
