Fully KnownIsaiah 43:1

The Pause Before My Name

This message is for the man who is the only one in the department with his accent, and hears the small pause before people say his name out loud

It is a half second, and he has been counting them for four years.

It happens in meetings. The chair goes round the table, and the names come out at their normal speed, and then there is a tiny gap before his, about the length of a breath, and then his name arrives slightly slower and slightly louder than the others, the way you say a word you have decided to get right.

He appreciates the effort. That is the complicated part. Nobody is mocking him. It is care. It is people trying. And it is also, four years in, a half second every single time that quietly announces to the room that he is the one who needed the extra beat.

Last month a new manager said his name perfectly and then said, warmly, hope I said that right, and he said you did, thanks, and something in him went very tired.

You may not have an accent. But you have a version of this: the beat before somebody says your name, or your title, or the thing about you they are being careful with. And the exhausting part is never the unkindness. It is the kindness, arriving every time, reminding you every time.

I am not going to tell you it is nothing, or that they mean well so it should not land. It does land. Four years of half seconds is about two minutes of pure silence, and every one of them was about you.

The Pause Before My Name

Name what the half second has cost

Nobody has costed it, so here it is, once, plainly.

It costs him the first ten seconds of every meeting, which he spends braced. It costs him the ordinary experience of hearing his own name and feeling nothing about it, which most people in that room have and do not know they have. It has cost him the shorter version of his name that he now offers people before they ask, which was a small surrender he made in his second year and has never mentioned to his mother.

And it costs him a low background question that he cannot switch off: whether he is a colleague or a consideration.

You have been paying a fee on your own name for four years, and God has never once needed a running start to say it. Isaiah 43:1 says He has called you by your name and that you are His, and it is His Spirit who takes that off a page and puts it in a meeting room rather than in a book about Israel. There has never been a half second on His side of it.

Called by name, and no hesitation in it

There is one line built exactly for a man who braces before the register.

Fear not: for I have redeemed you, I have called you by your name; you are mine.Isaiah 43:1

Three clauses and no gap anywhere in them. Redeemed. Called by name. Mine. There is nothing tentative in that sentence and no effort in it either, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes an old covenant line and makes it the thing a man actually hears when the chair goes round the table.

You are called by your name by the one who made the name, and the calling has never had a pause in it. That is not a comfort I invented for you. The written word puts the naming and the belonging in the same breath, and the Spirit is the one who makes belonging land in the body of a man who has spent four years wondering. The room is trying. He has never had to try.

And this has to be said, or the site turns cruel. Being the only one in the department who sounds like you is not a display. It was not arranged so that a company could learn something from watching you handle it well. God did not put you in that building to be an example to anybody at that table. You are not an exhibit and you never were.

What the article can and cannot change

I am not going to hand you a way to fix the meeting. There is not one, and anybody offering you a script is offering you a ninth thing to carry into a room that already has you braced.

What changes is which naming you are standing under while the half second happens. And those are two different rooms.

You have a name spoken over you without hesitation, and you were given it rather than granted it by a committee. Revelation 2:17 speaks of a new name written that only the one receiving it knows, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a private name a settled thing rather than a curiosity.

One plain sentence before we go further. If the tiredness around all this has stopped being tiredness and gone somewhere heavier, if there are days when going in at all is a genuine question, tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody at work. That is not a weakness in you. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So stop bracing. Not for the room, which will keep doing what rooms do. For the naming.

For four years the half second has been asking you a question at the top of every meeting: are you one of us or an item of care. And you have been answering it silently, twice a week, in a building that never asked.

You have an answer already given, in a voice with no pause in it, and it was settled long before the job. Isaiah 43:1 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the same Spirit is the one who makes redeemed and called and mine into three things a man can actually stand on at nine in the morning.

So go in. Let them try. Let it be care rather than a verdict, because that is genuinely all it is once you are no longer submitting evidence in that room.

You were named before the department existed, and the name has not been under review since. Jeremiah 1:5 says He knew you before He formed you, and the same Spirit who wrote that is in the room when the chair goes round the table.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud where nobody can hear you. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the name was given to you, so the authority to say who you belong to is yours and it does not belong to a meeting room. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a man who has been counting half seconds. However He answers about that department and those people, the outcome is His, and being easy for other people to pronounce was never a job He handed you.

  1. Half second pause before my name, you are not a verdict on whether I belong here. Isaiah 43:1 says redeemed and called and mine with no gap anywhere in it, and the room has been trying to do what He has never had to try to do.
  2. Question of whether I am a colleague or a consideration, you do not get to run under my whole working week. I do not have to settle it in that building, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding by bracing.
  3. Lord, You have called me by my name and You have never once needed a running start at it. Your word says I am Yours and that the fear can go. I thank You, and this morning I am walking in under Your naming instead of standing under theirs.
