The Only One Not Drinking

This message is for the man who is the only one not drinking at the office party, and who has to answer the same question with a smile eleven times

Eleven times. He counted, because counting is what he does instead of feeling things at parties.

The back room of an Italian place, forty of them, long tables. He is on the lime and soda, which is the drink that looks most like the other drinks, chosen for exactly that reason two years ago and never once mentioned to anybody.

And it goes like this. Someone notices. Someone says, always with warmth, are you not drinking. And then there is a pause of about a second in which he has to choose, in real time, between four different answers, none of which is the true one, and all of which start a conversation he did not come here to have.

Driving. That is the good one. Driving works.

Eleven times, over three hours, with eleven different people, each of whom asked once and thought nothing of it, and none of whom knows that between them they made him explain his own life to a room eleven times before the dessert arrived.

You may drink. That is not the point. But you have something about you that produces a question in every new room, and you have a short answer ready, and the short answer is a small deposit of yourself you leave behind each time you use it.

The Only One Not Drinking

The cost, itemized, before anything else

Nobody at that table has counted it, so we will, once, precisely.

It costs him about eleven seconds of active management per exchange, which is not the expensive part. The expensive part is the second before each one, which he has learned to feel coming, and which means he spends three hours slightly ahead of himself rather than in the room.

It cost him a friendship in his second year that he could have had if he had answered honestly once, which he did not, because honesty in a back room is a decision you cannot take back at eleven at night.

And it costs him the specific loneliness of being asked about the surface of a thing eleven times and about the substance of it not once.

You have been giving out a short answer for two years, and God has never once required an explanation from you at the door. Psalm 139:2 says He understands your thought from far off, and His Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it at a long table with a lime and soda on it. Eleven people asked. He has never had to.

Known under the tree, before the question

There is one line built for a man who has to explain himself in doorways.

Jesus answered and said unto him, Before that Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.John 1:48

Sit with the order of events, and let the Holy Spirit hold you there a moment. The man had just been introduced. He had said something skeptical about where Jesus came from. And what he gets back is not an argument and not a credential. It is a location and a moment: before the introduction, under a tree, on his own, doing whatever a man does under a tree when nobody is there.

That is the whole answer. Not I have heard about you. I saw you, in the part of your life that has no audience, before anybody said your name in a room, and the same Spirit is the one who makes that land on a man at an office party rather than staying a strange detail in a first chapter.

You were known under your own fig tree, and the knowing was complete before anybody in that room asked you a single question. That is not a warm reading of an odd verse. The written word puts the seeing before the calling and before the introduction, and the Spirit is the one who makes being already known feel like rest rather than exposure.

And it must be said plainly. Whatever you are not saying at that table is not a display. It was not arranged so that forty colleagues could learn something from watching you handle a question well. God did not build your two years to make a point over dessert. You are not an exhibit and you never were.

The article does not fix the back room

I am not going to hand you a better short answer. There is not one, and a better line would only be a more efficient way of doing the same tiring work.

What can change is who you are known by while the eleven questions come. Two things are true in that back room, and only one of them was under the tree.

You have been fully known since before the introduction, and the knowing did not wait for you to account for yourself. John 1:48 puts the seeing first in the sequence, and the Holy Spirit is the one who makes a written line into ground under a chair at a long table.

One plain sentence before we go further. If what sits behind the lime and soda is heavier than a preference, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody from work. That is not a weakness in you. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.

The breakthrough

So keep the short answer if you want it. Genuinely. This is not a call to disclose anything to forty people.

But stop paying the toll twice. You have been giving the answer and then privately grading yourself on it in the second afterward, which is the part that empties you. One of those is a social convenience. The other is a court, and you have been the only one sitting in it.

You have already been met at the level you have been hoping somebody would reach, and it was settled before you got in the car tonight. John 1:48 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes a written line and makes it a settled thing in a man on a Friday night.

So go back in and eat the dessert. Let the question be small, because it is small.

You are known under the tree, right now, as you read this, and no explanation is outstanding. Psalm 139:1 says searched and known, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been at that table since the starters.

Declare this over yourself

Say these out loud on the walk home. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the knowing was given to you, so the authority to say who has already met you is yours and it does not belong to a back room. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes a line like this land in a man who has answered the same question eleven times. However He answers about the years ahead, the outcome is His, and satisfying forty people's curiosity was never a job He handed you.

  1. Same question for the eleventh time tonight, you do not get an explanation from me. John 1:48 has the seeing happening under a tree before the introduction, and that means the hour with no witness had one.
  2. Court I convene in the second after I answer, you do not get to sit tonight. Giving a short answer is not a failure of honesty, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is holding what I have been holding by grading myself.
  3. Lord, You saw me under the fig tree before anybody said my name in a room. Your word says You understand my thought a long way off. I thank You, and I am walking back in there met rather than examined.

Why we ask you to say these out loud
