Twenty six months, nine hearings, and the door opened every single Sunday.
That is the part his family talks about. Not the case, which nobody mentions directly, but the Sundays. Through the whole thing, every week, there was rice and there were people and there was the pot on the back of the stove and the plastic chairs coming in from the garage, and his mother says it every time somebody new joins the family: through all of it, he never once canceled.
He would like to tell you what those Sundays were actually like from the inside.
There were about eleven of them where he stood in the kitchen with his hands on the counter for a minute before he could go through. There was one in the spring where a cousin asked an innocent question about school pickups and he had to go and stand in the yard. There was a whole October where he cooked with the phone face down on the windowsill because his lawyer's office called on Fridays and the ringing had started to do something to his chest.
He did not keep those Sundays going. That is what he cannot explain. Something did, and it was not the man standing in the kitchen with his hands on the counter.
You have a run like that. Some long grinding stretch where the thing that mattered most kept happening, and everybody credits you, and you were not the one doing it.

Name what twenty six months took
His mother did not count this part, so let us.
It took two years of his forties. It took most of a friendship, because the friend who came to the first three hearings could not come to the sixth and neither of them ever talked about it. It took his relationship with Fridays, which is not a joke: he still feels something at about eleven on a Friday morning and the case has been closed since March.
And it took the ordinary experience of his own home, because for twenty six months every room in that house was also a room where a phone might ring.
You have been sustaining something that was quietly costing you a decade, and God has never once totaled up what it took out of you. Psalm 34:18 says the Lord is near to the broken hearted and saves those crushed in spirit, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes that off a page and puts it in a kitchen with hands flat on a counter. Nobody in that dining room knew. He was never not in the room.
Cast on Him, and He does the sustaining
There is one line built for a man with a pot on the back of the stove.
Cast your burden upon the Lord, and he shall sustain you: he shall never suffer the righteous to be moved.Psalm 55:22
Watch what is given to whom. The casting is the man's, and it is one action, not a discipline. The sustaining is His, and it is continuous. And the last clause takes the whole weight of whether the man stays standing off the man entirely, and it is His Spirit who makes that a felt division of labor rather than a nicely balanced sentence.
You were sustained through twenty six months, and sustaining was never a thing you were doing. That is not a compliment with a verse attached. The written word gives the man one verb and God two, and the Spirit is the one who kept a door open on a hundred and thirteen Sundays. His mother said he never canceled. Psalm 55 does not use the word never about the man.
And it must be said plainly. Those hearings were not a display. They were not arranged so that a family could learn something about faithfulness by watching a man cook. God did not permit two years of court to make a point over rice. You are not an exhibit and you never were.
Two things a man who kept opening the door has to hear
The first is that God still sustains people. Not sustained, poetically, in an older world. Sustains, present tense, on a Sunday, at four in the afternoon, with plastic chairs coming in from the garage.
The second is that the sustaining was not earned by the cooking. He cooked because it was the one thing he could still control, which is not faith, it is coping, and he was sustained anyway.
You were held through two years you had nothing left to fund, and the holding did not wait for you to do it beautifully. Isaiah 46:4 says He has made and He will bear and He will carry and deliver, and the Spirit of God is the one who makes four verbs in a row into something a man can actually lean back on.
One plain sentence before we go on. If Friday mornings have gone somewhere heavier, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line before you call anybody in the family. That is not a failure in a father. That is God sending help with hands and a phone number, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So put the credit down. Not out of modesty, which is just the same weight held at a different angle.
For two years your family has been handing you an account of yourself, and you have been carrying it because refusing it would have required a conversation you did not have the energy for. And it is heavier than it looks, because an account of yourself that you know is false has to be maintained.
You have a sustaining that has never been in your hands, and setting the credit down does not put the Sundays at risk. Psalm 55:22 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and His Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a man can rest his forearms on.
So make the rice this Sunday. Let it be an afternoon rather than a testimony.
You were held through nine hearings and a hundred and thirteen Sundays, and the one who held you is not finished. Philippians 1:6 says He who began a good work will carry it through, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in that kitchen since the first hearing.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud in the kitchen before anybody arrives. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the sustaining was given to you, so the authority to say who kept this house open is yours and it does not belong to your mother's version of you. Scripture is the ground here, not my sympathy for two hard years, and the same Spirit is the one who makes a line like this land in a man with his hands on a counter. However He answers about what comes next with the children, the outcome is His, and holding a family together single handed was never a job He handed you.
- Two years of hearing dates, you do not get to close my door. Psalm 55:22 gives me one verb and gives God two, and the sustaining was never on my side of that sentence.
- Account of myself I have been maintaining because correcting it was too tiring, you do not get another Sunday. Being credited with something I did not do is its own weight, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is carrying what I have been pretending to carry.
- Lord, You sustained me and You never suffered me to be moved, and I have the fields of Sundays to show for it. Your word says the one who began a good work carries it through. I thank You, and this week I am cooking rice instead of holding a family together.
