She did not sleep, and then she went in and everybody said the thing they say.
Four in the morning is the number. That is when it starts, more or less every night now: not a thought exactly, just a physical thing, her heart going quickly and lightly like something small in a hedge, and then two hours of lying still so as not to wake anybody, and then the alarm.
And then, at ten, she sat with a woman whose marriage is coming apart, and did what she does, which is mostly nothing. She sat, and she did not fill the silences, and she asked one question near the end.
And the woman said, at the door: I do not know what it is about you. You bring such peace into a room.
She has been told that all her life. Teachers said it. Her sister says it. A man at a bus stop once said it and then apologized for saying it.
And she has never once been able to receive it, because she knows exactly what four in the morning is like, and there is nothing peaceful in that house between four and six, and the gap between those two facts has stopped being interesting to her and started being frightening.
You know that gap. What people say about you and what happens in your body at four are two different reports on the same person.

Name the four in the morning first
Nobody has counted this, and it comes before anything else.
It costs her two hours a night, which over months is not a metaphor, it is a physical debt.
It costs her the mornings, in the specific sense that she arrives everywhere already tired and nobody knows, because tiredness in a person known for peace reads as calm, which is the cruelest possible misreading.
And it costs her the compliment. She cannot take it. Somebody says peace and something in her flinches, and the flinch has now spread to other kind things people say, which is a widening loss that nobody around her can see.
You have been arriving at ten out of a body that was going at four, and God has never once measured you by what your heart does in the dark. Psalm 56:3 says what time I am afraid I will trust in You, which is written by somebody afraid, and the Spirit of God is the one who takes that off a page and puts it in a bedroom at four with the ceiling in the dark. He is not waiting for the heart rate to come down before He is interested.
My peace I give, and the giving is the whole sentence
There is one line built for a woman who cannot find any in her own house.
Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world gives, give I unto you.John 14:27
Two things and they both matter. First, it is His peace, named as His, given away rather than generated in the recipient. That is a statement about origin and origin is the whole subject here.
Second: not as the world gives. The world's giving is conditional and reciprocal and it arrives when circumstances allow it. His does not work that way, which means it can be present in a room at ten in the morning in a woman who was awake from four, and it is the Holy Spirit who makes that a fact about a specific sunroom rather than a lovely farewell speech.
You have peace that was given rather than produced, and it did not stop being given at four in the morning. That is not a way of talking a woman out of a hard night. The written word makes the peace His and the giving unconditional, and the Spirit is the one who was in the room at ten while a woman said almost nothing.
And the plain thing has to be said. The relief is not that you really are peaceful and the nights are an anomaly. The nights are real and they may not stop this month. The relief is that what people meet in you was never manufactured by a good night's sleep, so a bad one does not empty it.
What the flinch is actually about
There is a fear here and naming it is most of the work.
It is that she is a fraud in a specific and unusual way: that she has been ministering peace she does not have, and that somewhere there is a woman she sat with who would feel cheated if she knew about four in the morning.
You have not cheated anybody, and a channel is not a fraud for being empty. 2 Corinthians 4:7 says the treasure is in earthen vessels so that the excellency of the power may be of God and not of us, and His Spirit is the one who makes vessel a word about a container rather than an accusation about its honesty.
One plain sentence before we go on. If four in the morning has been getting longer, or if there are hours where carrying on is genuinely a question, please tell one real human being today, and please tell a doctor about the heart and the hours, and if it is urgent, call your doctor or a crisis line first. That is not a failure of peace. That is God sending help with a face on it, and reaching for it is obedience rather than collapse.
So hand it back, out loud, by name. Nine seconds, before you sleep or after you do not.
Not a correction to the woman at the door, who received something real and was not deceived. Say it to God: the peace they meet in me is Yours, You give it and I do not make it, and I am giving it back to You before four o'clock comes round again.
You have peace that is given rather than held, and giving it back does not leave you with less at four. John 14:27 is the ground under that, not my sympathy, and the Holy Spirit is the one who takes a written line and makes it something a woman can lie down with.
And then, when four comes, say the second verse of that same sentence: let not your heart be troubled. Not as an instruction you have failed. As the thing being said to you in the dark by the one who gives it.
You are given peace that the world's conditions do not govern, and your heart going quickly does not revoke it. John 14:27 says not as the world gives, and the same Spirit who wrote that has been in that bedroom every night between four and six.
Declare this over yourself
Say these out loud where nobody can hear you. Christ is in you and you are in Him, and the peace was given to you rather than produced by you, so the authority to name where it comes from is yours and it does not belong to anybody at a door. Scripture is the ground here, not my reassurance about your temperament, and it is His Spirit who makes a line like this land in a woman who was awake from four. However He answers about the nights, the outcome is His, and manufacturing peace for the people you sit with was never a job He handed you.
- Heart going like a bird at four, you are not a contradiction of anything. John 14:27 makes the peace His and the giving unconditional, and it never once said the giving waits for a quiet night.
- Flinch that comes up when anybody says a kind thing about me, you do not get to spread any further. A vessel is not a fraud for being empty, and in the name of Jesus the Holy Spirit is carrying what arrives in a room I cannot feel.
- Lord, Your peace is what You give and You give it not as the world gives, and what that woman met at ten was Yours and never mine. Your word says let not my heart be troubled. I thank You, and I am handing it back before four comes round again.
